One thing great about the human brain is that we always want to learn new things. We have this weird insatiable thirst for knowledge, be it for practical uses, or we just want to learn continuously. There’s the saying that goes “you learn something new every day,” so that means we’re always learning even outside of academic institutions even if it’s trivial.
Not everything we’re going to tell you on this list is entirely viable outside of just having this knowledge. Some of them just inform you about some stuff that you could learn about, they’re not the type of facts that you necessarily need to learn. But hey, at least you can keep your brain active, and you can keep learning, so tune in to the 12 facts we’re going to give you.
1. The Left-Handed Population
To start off our long list did you know facts, we’ll have to talk about our lefty brothers and sisters. Apparently, around 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. Studies were done to find out what contributes to the “handedness” of a person – it can be from the time spent in the womb, or it could even be attributed to one’s heritage, pretty weird, right?
2. Rabbit’s Weird Diet
Rabbits have two types of feces, the little black ones (often firmer) and the softer, less round ones – specifically known as cecotropes. You know where I’m going with this, they eat their own feces! The cecotropes still have undigested nutrients, so they eat it again to re-absorb any leftover nutrients from the food they ate. They do this process for at least once a day.
3. The Blood of Lobsters
Did you know, the color of a lobster’s blood is colorless? However, due to the high amounts of copper found in their blood, it turns their blood blue due to the oxidation process that copper goes through. Copper would typically turn green or blue when exposed to oxygen. A bit of scientific reasoning behind a delicious main course with a side of butter!
4. Honey Won’t Expire
We’re staying on the topic of food facts. We’ll talk about a healthier and tastier alternative to some plain old sugar. If honey is given the right treatment of heating, straining, and proper sealing, then the honey will never spoil! It will stay the same honey for as long as you can think. The oldest jar of honey is actually 5500 years old! It’s still the same tasty nectar!
5. The Origin Of French Fries
Believe it or not, but the oh-so-popular French Fries everybody loves don’t actually come from France – talk about a false advertisement, right? Historians actually stated that the first times when potatoes were cut into sticks and fried started in Belgium’s late 1600s! Street Vendors would sell this treat before the French Revolution. Maybe that’s where it came from.
6. Cats Love Sleep
Getting off food, for now. We’ll talk about the feline pet. Cats are great pets to keep around – especially since you want one that lazes around all day. It’s been said that cats sleep for about 15 hours a day, some even up to 20! Since cats are more active at night, they sleep during the day. So it’s like they spend two-thirds of their lives sleeping. Ah, the enviable, sweet cat life.
7. Cats Have The Pipes
Pipes as in the vocal cords. In fact, they have a hundred of the pipes! They actually have 2 primary vocal cords, but just two can produce over 100 different sounds. They work along with their trachea and the cartilage in their throats. So if you’re wondering why they sound so diverse and can produce plenty of varied sounds, there’s your reasoning.
8. Reindeers Stay Warm Naturally
We’re still with the facts for the Animal Kingdom, but we move on to Santa’s trusty sleigh-pullers this time. The reindeer’s fur consists of many hairs that are hollow, and if we learned anything from our high school science classes, it’s that air is a great insulator for heat. Their nose hairs exchange heat efficiently, keeping the air they breathe, warm.
9. Wind Is Actually Silent
Let’s get off the animal kingdom facts now. The wind actually makes no sound, the sounds that you hear on a windy day actually only comes when the wind comes into contact with something. Depending on the speed of the wind, it can change the pitches of the sound that emitted from the various object it comes in contact with. Pretty cool, huh?
10. Eggs Are Extremely Good For You
Do you remember everyone older than you telling you to take your vitamins to grow strong and big? Yeah, well, you can take every single vitamin(except Vitamin C) in just a single egg. Eggs also contain high traces of fat, minerals, and proteins. So it’s technically a really healthy food but too much of it, like anything else, is really unhealthy for you.
11. Soundless Space
Here’s another cool science fact. Sound can only be heard here on earth for us because the air carries a lot of molecules, and sound travels by vibrations. So sound travels using the vibrations of molecules in the air. Since space has no molecules of air at all, any sound produced has nothing to travel through, meaning there’s no sound at all in space.
12. Bones Stronger Than Concrete
Yeah, you read that right. The bones in our thighs support the weight of our bodies. Our entire body. It is actually estimated to be over 8 times stronger than concrete. So never underestimate the strength of your bones, and remember to always drink milk for that calcium! Blood also comes from the marrow in our thigh bones, 2-in-1 did you know facts!
Takeaway
There you have it! A mixture of cool did you know facts that allow you to show off a little party trick by knowing some weird stuff that not many people may know. Besides learning a quirky party trick, you also learned some new scientific facts to include as fun facts in your next informative PowerPoint – you know if it fits in with the presentation.
