Alabama's strict anti-abortion bill headed to governor

The only way to get a Supreme Court to revisit the core issue of whether conception instantly creates a human life - which is the only scientific interpretation possible - is to ban all abortions on that basis and then roll the dice.

It would be one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the United States. That includes Georgia, where Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed a "heartbeat bill" into law on Tuesday.

Politicians behind the bans across the country have made it clear their goal is to prompt court challenges in hopes of ultimately overturning the 1973 Roe v Wade decision legalising abortion.

After the vote passed 25-6, the ACLU of Alabama announced on Twitter that they would file a lawsuit to stop the abortion ban.

Nonetheless, Democrats in the state are outraged with the state's Senate minority leader, Bobby Singleton, voicing his displeasure with the legislation. The amendment was voted down 21-11, with four Republicans joining Democrats in seeking the amendment.

All 27 Republican lawmakers in the 35-seat Senate are men.

"Is it a life?" "I believe our law says it is". Collins said of the bill after approval. Ivey has not publicly taken a stance on the bill but has previously aligned herself as anti-abortion, lamenting the courts striking down another Alabama abortion law a year ago. "You just aborted the state of Alabama with your rhetoric with this bill". "When is a person a person?" Clyde Chambliss said in a statement after the bill's passage.

Ms Collins said that the law isn't meant to be a long-term measure and that lawmakers could add a rape exception if states regain control of abortion access. The Plan B pill, for example, can prevent a pregnancy if taken shortly after sexual contact. The legislation provides no exceptions for rape or incest.

More than 45 years after Roe v. Wade was decided, abortion remains a flashpoint in our society. The groups mentioned stated they will be looking to challenge the bill, should it become a law.

Those fighting the legislation stressed that women across the USA should know that abortion remains legal for now, despite these state actions, which are deemed to be unconstitutional.

In fact, Republicans in ME are on the cusp of blocking a state-level equal rights amendment - which would enshrine in the foundational document of state government that women are equal under the law - because they are afraid that it will somehow guarantee access to abortion services for poor women. Vivian Davis Figures said.

"This bill will not take effect anytime in the near future, and abortion will remain a safe, legal medical procedure at all clinics in Alabama", the organization tweeted Tuesday night, along with a map showing clinic locations in the state. "Who is going to stay in a state like this?"

Which states have recently passed abortion bans?

. Such political tugs-of-wars between the federal government's branches, and indeed as between federal and state governments, is how the ultimate question of who interprets the Constitution has historically been settled. Under the bill, women seeking or undergoing abortions wouldn't be punished. If implemented, the bill would be the strictest pro-life statute in the nation.

"The antiabortion carnival show now going on in the legislature is hypocritical grandstanding", Hamill said.

The legislation is certain to face legal challenges.
