Man charged with three counts of murder

The second victim, Alsup, 17, was killed on March 9.

"Have u seen athina", he wrote.

Sheriff Fred Newman said he was contacted by the Johnson City Tennessee Police Department two weeks ago in order to set up an interview with Wright because authorities believed he was the last person to have contact with 25-year-old Athina Hopson, who had been reported missing March 21 by her mother. Wright says all three shootings were accidental, but police don't believe him.

"Yes, this one individual lived in the community, but it was, in my opinion, an isolated incident", said Newman.

"We find that hard to believe", the sheriff said.

Sheriff Newman would add that police are looking for other possible victims, since Wright traveled up and down the East Coast.

Wright told investigators he met the 17-year-old through her father who also worked in the carnival.

Chapman grew more concerned. Her cell phone was reportedly found in the vehicle.

Investigation of Wright was initiated by Johnson City police.

Authorities continue to search for the body of Hopson, which Wright claimed to have thrown into the river. On Thursday, when Wright was being interviewed by detectives from Tennessee at the local sheriff's office, he allegedly confessed to killing Hopson and two other female victims, Newman said.

James Michael Wright, 23, is accused of killing the women in February and March near his home in a far western corner of rural Virginia.

"He wasn't certainly on their radar as being in any type of criminal activity", Newman said of Wright's employer. On his property, they found two bodies.

James Michael Wright, 23, admitted to carrying out the fatal shootings over three weeks after the cellphone of a missing 25-year-old was discovered in his truck, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. During the interview, Wright confessed to killing three women, the release stated. Vanmeter's parents reported her missing March 17.

Citing court documents, WJHL-TV reported that Wright told investigators he shot and killed Vanmeter after a fight. "I know there's a special place in hell for me", it said. The girl, who was the daughter of Wright's co-worker, had been reported missing a day earlier. He claimed he was trying to shoot an animal when he shot the 17-year-old. He said he placed the woman's body in the North Fork Holston River, according to Newman.

Wright (left and right) insisted that all three women were shot accidentally. Wright allegedly told investigators he shot Hopson and was transporting her body in the back of his truck when the remains fell out and rolled down an embankment near a bridge.

"What was going through this man's head?" she said.

Newman said he has no reason to believe Wright meant to harm himself by crashing into the bus two days after allegedly killing Hopson. He declined to release any additional information about the alleged motive in the killings.

Now, he said, police are working with the Drew Exposition carnival company to trace its route along the coast and throughout the Southeast.

During the press conference, Newman was asked whether he classified Wright as a serial killer.
