The Samsung Galaxy Fold Is MIA

Despite the mishaps of Samsung's Galaxy Fold, almost every brand wants a foldable phone of its own.

The tech giant's foray into foldables wouldn't be much of a surprise as Google revealed native Android support for foldable displays in November 2018, ahead of the official Samsung Galaxy Fold reveal that same month. These flagship Pixel smartphones offer gripping photography experience but in spite of that, the company has had a tough time selling them. Its fiasco with the Galaxy Fold, which may not even ship at all, has made both consumers and manufacturers think twice about the prospects of foldable phones.

Samsung can be credited for having singularly excited the market over foldable phones and then killed the mood.

Beyond that, Queiroz did not share details of Google's foldable phone prototypes, such as the way the screen works when the phone is folded or unfolded.

Also, it makes sense for Google to wait and see if anyone makes a working foldable smartphone and if it's popular enough for the company to invest for the commercial production.

At its annual Google I/O developer conference in California on Tuesday the search giant detailed its commitment to foldable devices as part of the next version of Android, now codenamed "Q".

The Samsung Galaxy Fold phone is shown on a screen at Samsung's Unpacked event in San Francisco, California, US, Feb. 20, 2019.
