Trump plans state visit to United Kingdom in early June

Donald Trump has accepted an invitation for a state visit to the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II said on Tuesday.

The visit will take place from June 3 to 5, the palace said, adding that further details would be announced in due course.

The British Queen and her husband Philip have previously made four state visits to the USA.

Protesters against Trump's previous visit used a variety of means to communicate their disapproval, from flying a "Trump Baby" blimp to holding protest signs along streets in Scotland - where Trump paid a two-day visit to his Turnberry golf resort. Protests involving tens of thousands of demonstrators overshadowed his non-state trip to Britain last July.

A state visit to the UK has been on the table since Trump was elected back in 2016, and both sides made several efforts to make official plans for Trump to visit with UK Prime Minister Theresa May and to visit Buckingham Palace for an official engagement with Queen Elizabeth II, but nothing was ever set in stone.

Theresa May said the state visit would provide an "opportunity to strengthen our already close relationship" with the US.

Trump's state visit has been a divisive issue for Britons since May issued the invitation, with more than 1.8 million people signing a petition calling for him to be prevented from making such a trip, leading to a debate in parliament in 2017.

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised Mrs May's handling of Brexit.

"Inevitably if Donald Trump is in town there will be controversy, there will be protests, and. veterans will be pushed out from the coverage", Liberal Democrat Mr Vernon-Jackson said.

In a statement from the press office in Washington DC confirming the state visit, Trump called The Queen "Her Royal Majesty".

The Speaker said at the time that addressing Parliament was "not an automatic right, it is an earned honour".

Countries which fought alongside the United Kingdom in the historic military operation, as well as Germany, have been invited to attend.

Mr Bercow was urged last week to allow Mr Trump to address Parliament after rumours of the USA president's state visit began circulating.

"That Trump has even been offered a state visit - with all the pomp and ceremony that it will entail - is truly shocking", the chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Dave Webb, said in a statement.

The White House announcement on the forthcoming trip also stated that President and Mrs Trump would travel to Portsmouth during their stay to attend a ceremony marking the D-Day anniversary.
