Over 70 Climate Change Protesters in London Slapped With Charges

Below is a tweet from the London Extinction Rebellion account of the protest.

Dr Steve Melia, who has advised governments on issues including eco-towns and Olympic regeneration, will face charges over an alleged public order offence, it emerged yesterday. Hundreds of others have been released under investigation.

She said: "Many people are scared and feel bad - "I was not the one of first people to do that; I am behind now; I'm only going to look silly because I did not start before" - but what they don't realise is that it's so few that have actually realised what is going on".

The Metropolitan Police today said they had brought charges for "various offences" including blocking roads and obstructing police, as widespread protests continue this week.

Extinction Rebellion organisers retreated by Monday to Marble Arch - a monument on the edge of Hyde Park that allows limited protests to continue without disrupting traffic.

Inside the chamber, former Labour leader Ed Miliband said the government must declare a climate emergency and introduce a "green new deal".

Scotland Yard's tactics in policing the demonstrations appeared to harden at the weekend with protesters cleared from three of their four roadblocks.
