London braces for rail disruption by climate-change protesters

Climate change protesters in London alarmed some morning commuters Wednesday by reportedly climbing subway cars and gluing their hands to them, among other weird acts of protest.

Climate change activists have climbed on top of trains and glued themselves to the carriage in the capital as they demand radical action to cut carbon emissions. Police have made almost 300 arrests in connection to the activist's multi-day protest so far.

Extinction Rebellion, which generated headlines with a semi-nude protest in parliament earlier this month, is demanding the government reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

Police said they expected the demonstrations to continue in the next few weeks and promised to take action if necessary.

A Twitter account connected to the group posted several images of the havoc caused by the protest Wednesday morning.

Four activists sat outside Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's home in Islington, North London, said they were are "all Jeremy Corbyn supporters" but want the Labour Party to go further than declaring a "climate emergency". The group Extinction Rebellion is calling for a week of civil disobedience against what it says is the failure to tackle the causes of climate change.

Climate change protesters block roads in London
The majority of these arrests were made for breaching Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 and obstructing a highway. Primarily, camping will be happening at Marble Arch. "We are here tonight to declare that we do not wish to be at war".

The protests were organised by the campaign group Extinction Rebellion, which was established previous year in Britain by academics and has become one of the world's fastest-growing environmental movements.

Wi-Fi at Tube stations has been disabled in a bid to stop campaigners intent on disrupting services co-ordinating their protest.

A man dressed in a dark suit and a woman wearing a black jacket stood on the roof of a train at the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in Canary Wharf, holding a banner which read: "Climate Emergency".

"I totally want to apologize to people using public transport".

"We need to ensure we are striking the right balance between allowing the right to a peaceful protest, while ensuring disruption to communities is kept to a minimum", Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove said on Tuesday.
