Lincoln Corsair looks to make waves in the compact luxury SUV segment

Introduced at the New York International Auto Show, the Corsair is the smallest SUV in Lincoln's lineup, but the company isn't skimping on the tech found in the vehicle. Corsair is created to give luxury customers technology to make their drive effortless, such as Phone As A Key, Head-Up Display and standard Lincoln Co-Pilot360™ driver-assist features.

"Entering the fastest-growing luxury segment, the all-new Corsair is artistically crafted, expertly designed and infused with our unwavering attention and commitment to detail; it's unapologetically Lincoln", said in a statement Joy Falotico, Lincoln president. Melding design cues from the Aviator and Navigator with a modest helping of Audi and Range Rover (the latter in the sharply tapering roofline and jutting roof spoiler), the Corsair definitely has one thing going for it: Unlike some badge-engineered Lincolns of old, the Corsair won't be confused with its Ford-branded Escape counterpart. "It is virtually sculpture in motion, a vehicle definitely meant to seduce", says David Woodhouse, director of design, Lincoln. Quietness is paramount for Corsair. There's a dual-wall dashboard to keep engine noise out via an extra air gap, along with Active Noise Control.

This former Motown man was charmed by the selection of six onboard "symphonic chimes" that ring out in various situations, all sampled from recordings by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Placement, tuning, calibration and the number of Revel speakers are all unique to each Lincoln vehicle, created to ensure audio quality and accuracy for each cabin size and acoustics. Every Corsair also has Lincoln Connect and a 4G LTE wi-fi hotspot. Additional technologies are seamlessly integrated through SYNC® 3 with AppLink™; users simply plug their mobile phone into their SYNC 3-equipped Corsair to access apps directly from an available 8-inch touch screen. Rear seats slide fore and aft 6 inches, and cargo volume is a generous 28 cubic feet behind the rear seatbacks-with a standard power liftgate and a low cargo floor that for suitcases to be stacked on their side. It's equipped with digital displays, available 24-way adjustable massaging seats and a sliding back seat that can provide as much legroom as some three-row SUVs.

Like some petite competitors, the Corsair-built alongside the Escape in Louisville, Ky. -will be offered exclusively in turbocharged four-cylinder guise: A 2.0-liter with 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.3-liter with 280 horses and 310 pound-feet.

For the first time in a Lincoln there'll be integral bush suspension at the rear. The AWD system, which activates when traction gets dicey, will be an option with the smaller engine and standard with the 2.3-liter.

Like the MKC, the Corsair can be front- or all-wheel drive, with different turbo-4 engines. It, too, will get the 8-speed SelectShift transmission, but come with all-wheel drive as standard. The drive can be further customized with five of Lincoln's signature drive modes - Normal, Excite, Slippery, Deep Conditions and Conserve, the last four just Millennial newspeak for "sport", "rain", "off-road" and "Eco".
