The initiative involves the State Department, the National Security Council and other USA agencies.

During the meeting, Trump said she supported initiatives to boost opportunities for women looking to start up business in Ethiopia and announced that a loan of $260,000 would be granted to help the company Azalech Coffee Roasting expand.

President Donald Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum in February, establishing the Women's Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative.

It was not immediately clear if the controversy that surrounds the USA president will follow his daughter to Africa.

"Ethiopia's success is Africa's success", she said.

Reaction to the visit reflected the contradictions of Ivanka Trump's role.

Ivanka Trump was also expected to announce additional support for businesses.

Ivanka Trump, who has been successful in fashion business, is estimated to have net worth $300 million, while her husband Jared Kushner, who runs real-estate business, could be $800 million, according to US media reports.

Ms Trump, who serves as an adviser to her father, will also attend a World Bank policy summit while in Ethiopia.

The White House spending plan would cut overall funding for diplomacy and development.

For parts of the trip, Ivanka and Green will be joined David Bohigian, acting president of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), as well as Kristalina Georgieva, interim president of the World Bank Group, which is hosting the summit.

Experts praised the governmentwide approach, which will incorporate new and existing programs, though some stressed that it was still early in the process. "I think she's coming genuinely to empower women and it's good that she's coming because she will push forward our agenda", she said. The investment comes as the president is proposing cuts to foreign aid, and as the administration is expanding a ban on US aid to groups that promote or provide abortions.

Georgieva said in a statement that economic empowerment "can help unleash the enormous potential of women entrepreneurs for job creation and economic growth, especially in Africa".

Daniel Runde of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said Ivanka Trump was strategically building on the work of past administrations.

The project is financed by a $50m (£38m) fund within the U.S. worldwide development aid agency (USAid). "Ivanka Trump is playing a similar role to the role that Secretary Clinton played".
