95-year-old American man killed by tornado in Mississippi

The massive storm system that killed several people from Texas to MS is now barreling east, threatening to spawn tornadoes and other catastrophic weather from New England to the Gulf Coast.

"The main threat will be damaging winds with the line, but an isolated tornado and isolated instances of flooding can not be ruled out as well", National Weather Service forecasters said.

In East Texas, the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old died when strong winds toppled a tree onto the back of their family's auto in Lufkin while it was in motion.

Multiple injuries were reported in the Robertson County town of Franklin, the NWS said.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday is the best setup for potential severe weather that we have had so far this season. This morning, there is a lot of heavy rain moving through Alabama, into Georgia and eastern Tennessee. The children, ages 8 and 3, were dead at the scene, although both parents, who were in the front seat, escaped injury, he said.

The weather service also says preliminary information showed an EF-3 tornado with winds of 140 mph touched down in Franklin, located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Dallas.

University spokesman Sid Salter said some debris, possibly carried by the tornado, was found on campus, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged.

At least 25 people were taken to hospitals for treatment after a suspected tornado struck the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site in East Texas during a Native American cultural event in Alto, about 130 miles (209 kilometers) southeast of Dallas, said Police Chief Jeremy Jackson.

Storms could bring damaging winds and isolated threats of large hail and tornadoes, meteorologists said. Some people had to be extricated from their damaged dwellings.

"Damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes will be the primary hazards, but isolated hail may accompany the strongest [storms]", the Storm Prediction Center wrote. Trees were down and at least some minor structural damage was reported in residential areas east of the campus.

In another storm death nearby, an unidentified victim's body was trapped in a vehicle submerged in floodwaters in Calhoun, Louisiana, Springfield said.

With an extremely moist and unstable atmosphere in place, residents in the lower Mississippi Valley are bracing for several hours of severe weather Saturday afternoon and evening, featuring storms capable of producing long track and violent tornadoes. His name was not immediately released.
