The Far North Queensland communities of Aurukun and Weipa are next in the firing line as Tropical Cyclone Trevor continues to track across Cape York Peninsula.

"A total of 460 people have lost power and while those numbers may not seem high, every person in the communities of Lockhart River, Coen and close to half of Aurukun are in darkness", she said.

The possibility of gusts upwards of 125 km/h is anticipated for the coast between Cape Grenville and Coen as the cyclone approaches Tuesday afternoon, with further gusts of up to 170 km/h expected at the point of landfall if the cyclone remains a category three.

Lockhart River Mayor Wayne Butcher said Trevor was the worst he had endured.

"It was ferocious - the wind was just constant between 4pm and midnight", he said.

"This was probably the worst one. this one basically sat near the community and hounded us for hours".

"Rain sipping into my house through window latch and feels like the house is about to be lifted up on all sides but all good".
