The Players: Tiger Woods 'excited' about his game ahead of Masters

Tiger Woods saved his best for last on Sunday at the 2019 Players Championship.

There were only four other water balls at the hole from the entire field on Friday as calm conditions made it play about as easy as possible.

Had he not dropped four shots at the island green Friday, Woods could have been in the mix Sunday. But overall, Woods showed continued progress.

"I felt like I was playing well", Woods said after his round Sunday. Even though he is well out of reach to win the tournament, Woods said that his goal was simply to move up the leaderboard and shoot under par on Sunday.

"I'm guaranteed to play three (rounds at the WGC-Match Play) instead of when I played it was only one guaranteed, so that's kind of nice knowing that I'll be able to get at least three good rounds in, possibly more if I play well, and that's basically like a tournament", Woods said.

Health problems have plagued Woods for years, including a fourth back surgery in April 2017. He made it through a year ago somewhat healthy, playing in 18 events and winning the Tour Championship in September. His showing at The Players tipped things in a positive way for Woods.

Woods regrouped to play his remaining 10 holes in two under par and return a 71, but on three under par he was six shots behind surprise clubhouse leader Jim Furyk, the 48-year-old former Ryder Cup captain carding eight birdies in a flawless 64. Yet he left TPC Sawgrass full of optimism with major-championship season on the horizon, beginning next month at the Masters.

"It's right on track", Woods said of his game.

"I drove it not quite as long on the weekend with a little bit cooler temperatures, but I was driving it pretty straight and I was able to shape the golf ball both ways with all three of my woods, which was good to see". Unfortunately for him, the first three rounds weren't good enough for the last one to mean much.

Woods was at his best on the front nine. "Just need a few more putts to go in, but that's about it".

However, the 14-time major victor bounced back with a birdie at the par-5 second (his 11th).

Woods finished at 282, 6 under par and in a tie for 30th, 10 shots back of victor Rory McIlroy. He picked up one more on the par-5 11th hole, but gave the shot back with a bogey on No. 14. "Wanted to make sure I get that organized coming into a week where you can hit a few shots where you're standing on your head having to hit some weird shots, and the way I was feeling in Mexico, that would have been a tall order for me". I only had a few of those this week, so all in all it was a solid week.
