Eli Manning's overpaid, can't play is crock — Giants GM

In the stunning trade that sent Beckham to the Browns, the Giants acquired Cleveland's 2019 first-round pick (No. 17 overall), one of the Browns third-round picks, plus safety Jabrill Peppers.

Gettleman also defended Manning's record.

One was that Beckham past year signed a $90 million contract extension, and Gettleman said that deal wasn't made so the Giants could send Beckham to another team.

The Giants went 4-4 down the stretch, a span where Manning threw 13 touchdowns against five interceptions, to finish with a 5-11 season, so Gettleman clearly liked what he saw.

Brandon Beane, however, wasn't interested in discussing a deal. "We were not actively shopping him". He also admitted to numerous conversations with the San Francisco 49ers previous year, though nothing materialized. It was finalized over the weekend when Beckham and Peppers passed physicals, Gettleman said. And on offense you got to have a quarterback around. OK?

"That's the question everybody asks", Gettleman said. It was too much value for us.

Jets sign Tom Compton to help fill out offensive line
Although it's unclear if Compton could also play fullback like Dozier. Not a bad signing at all at this stage of free agency. He got off to a decent start last season.

Israel says Gaza rockets that led to airstrikes fired by mistake
The organizers of a weekly protest along the Israeli border canceled the demonstration in the wake of the escalation. A ball of fire is seen following an Israel air strike in Rafah Southern Gaza, on, early, March 15, 2019.

"And it is so interesting to me that he now is the caretaker of this franchise, which is so rich in history, because there's no person I know in the NFL right now who reveres football history more than John Dorsey". There is no intrigue. "None of that stuff". Finally, because of Odell's talent and personality, this was a decision we did not enter into lightly. You ask me about my mantra of quitting on talent, and yes, I believe that fully, but quitting on talent is when you cut a player or get marginal value in return, and we all know this did not happen here.

The 68-year-old GM said he knows the Giants did not sign Beckham last summer to a $90 million deal to trade him, but things changed when the Browns made a value-packed offer that "knocked it out of the park" and allowed NY to address multiple positions on a team coming off a 5-11 record.

He said he didn't shop around for a better deal because the team making the call plays at a disadvantage. It's a good fleshing out of just how quickly the deal came together.

The recent personnel moves have put the Giants under a microscope, especially because the team has made the playoffs once (2016) since winning the Super Bowl in February 2012.

For a guy who wasn't planning to trade Odell Beckham this offseason, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman sure was talking to quite a few teams about making a possible deal.

"I completely understand why people would debate the merits of this deal", Gettleman added.
