A monster late winter storm packing wind gusts as high as 80 miles per hour - and predicted to rise to the level of a "bomb cyclone" - is expected to wreak havoc across the central U.S. beginning Wednesday, forecasts show.

Jared Polis has activated the Colorado National Guard for search and rescue operations for stranded drivers in the blizzard.

The Red River Valley is expected to receive about 6-8 inches of snow. That includes the Denver Public Schools, which cited "severe weather and road conditions".

Utah: The Beehive State appears to be on the back end of the storm. The National Weather Service has issued high wind and winter storm advisories for an area ranging from Colorado and New Mexico over to Nebraska and parts of Texas, and up to South Dakota.
