FCA to recall almost 900,000 vehicles that don't meet emissions standards

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Wednesday that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has agreed to voluntarily recall almost 900,000 vehicles over emissions violations.

Multinational auto manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) will recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles after they failed to meet U.S. emissions standards, according to USA regulators. Chrysler said the non-compliant emissions were discovered in "routine in-use emissions testing, and reported to the EPA".

It should be noted that the issue has no direct safety implications to drivers and passengers, and the EPA has not levied any fines as a result of this discovery.

Recalled vehicles include: 2011-2016 Dodge Journey, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2011-2014 Dodge Avenger, 2011-2012 Dodge Caliber, 2011-2016 Jeep Compass, and 2011-2016 Jeep Patriot. A FCA spokesperson, in an email to Roadshow, said it was the result of a routine series of tests performed on in-service vehicles.

"We began contacting affected customers last month to advise them of the needed repairs, which will be provided at no charge", the company added.

The recall is not related to the diesel investigation.

Its U.S. -traded shares were down almost 1 percent.

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the agency welcomed the voluntary recall.

Due to the need to supply such a large number of replacement catalytic converters, the recall will be carried out in four phases through the end of 2019.

The recall will be conducted in phases, with owners of older cars being notified first that they can bring their cars in to be fixed. In the meantime, owners can continue to drive their vehicles. These two factors are "associated with premature death, asthma emergency room visits, increased hospitalizations due to exacerbation of chronic heart and lung diseases, and other serious health impacts".

The hefty penalty was the latest fallout from the USA government's stepped-up enforcement of vehicle emissions rules after Volkswagen AG admitted in September 2015 to intentionally evading emissions rules.
