Decision time: Brexit deal returns to parliament

A survey by ComRes found that 44 per cent of the public now believe the United Kingdom should leave without a deal if Brussels refuses to make any further concessions - a six point rise from January.

Mrs May could now face the prospect of a three-figure defeat when MPs vote on her deal on Tuesday.

Lewis said talks would continue over the weekend. "We may never leave at all".

The government has so far failed to secure changes to the divorce deal that could gain the backing of lawmakers, after they roundly rejected it in January.

"There is a risk and possibility that we end up losing Brexit if we get the votes wrong in the next couple of weeks", he told the BBC.

Ahead of a vote on Tuesday on the divorce agreement struck with the bloc past year, more than 50 businesses warned members of parliament in an open letter of the dangers of failing to unite behind a way forward that avoids a hard border and protects peace and economic progress in Northern Ireland.

At the heart of the dispute is a disagreement over how to manage the border between the British province of Northern Ireland and EU-member Ireland.

May has been trying to negotiate changes to her Brexit deal, especially the controversial backstop plan, which was drawn up to prevent the return of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.

But this is unlikely to be enough to convince May's critics in the Commons, which rejected the deal by 432 votes to 202 in January. Senior Brexiteer Steve Baker and the DUP's Westminster leader Nigel Dodds claimed on Saturday that Mrs May's "unchanged" deal will inevitably be voted down on Tuesday.

Ahead of a crucial round of votes, Mrs May has issued a last-ditch plea for her much maligned deal with the European Union (EU).

May is offering the possibility of a "short, limited" delay, but is herself opposed, warning that eventually MPs will have to make a decision about Britain's future.

MPs are then set to vote the following day on delaying Brexit from March 29.

"We are hoping we will be able to win that vote but that does depend on the European Union coming to the table and taking seriously the (UK's) proposals".

On Friday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said that if the UK decides to hold a second referendum, Brexit may never take place, thus the authorities would be letting the voters down.
