Tokyo prosecutor says Ghosn's bail conditions not sufficient

Former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn arrives at his place of residence, in Tokyo, Japan, on March 8, 2019.

Ghosn was photographed leaving in a white hospital mask, a blue cap worn by electricians, a mismatching uniform jacket, and pants with orange reflective stripes typically worn by construction workers.

Many were baffled by the somewhat transparent disguise, which has riveted Japanese tabloid media.

Doubters have questioned the effectiveness of the conditions, with Japanese media speculating that Ghosn could easily leave his residence and call or meet people involved in the case.

A lawyer representing ex-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn on Friday apologised for "tainting" the tycoon's reputation by suggesting he disguise himself as a workman to leave detention on bail.

While reporters did follow the van he entered, they did not appear to have tracked down his living quarters.

Takano said he wanted Ghosn to avoid detection and prevent "the whole world" from knowing where he lives.

But Takano acknowledged the plan backfired, with the world's media instead snapping photos and filming video of Ghosn, transformed from his previously suave executive image.

Carlos Ghosn's lawyer apologises as workman disguise ploy backfires

In Japan, suspects are routinely kept in detention until preparations for their trials are ready, meaning they are often detained for months.

Kukimoto did not comment on specific bail conditions. After the Tokyo District Court accepted his bail request, Ghosn emphasized his innocence in a statement made through a USA representative, saying, "I am innocent". He had been detained for 108 days since November 19 and was released on 1 billion yen ($9 million) bail after his third request to the court for release on bail.

Any violation of those restrictions could land Ghosn back in detention.

Takano said he came up with the disguise scheme because he was anxious that the place Ghosn will be living "would be known throughout the world". While it didn't entirely work, Takano said, "by some miracle" Ghosn managed to have a private reunion with his family in his new residence. He is also known for having studied USA law and being aware of global standards in the criminal justice system.

For the next phase of his legal battles, Ghosn has a new legal team headed by Junichiro Hironaka, who is said to be an experienced defense attorney.

The lawyer said the scheme was immature and hurt Ghosn's reputation.

Ghosn led Nissan for two decades, saving the Yokohama-based automaker from near bankruptcy.
