Teen Who Defied Mother By Getting Vaccinated To Testify Before Congress

He added that she turned to anti-vaccine groups online and on social media "looking for her evidence in defense" of her argument rather than relying on information provided by health officials or other credible sources.

"When you convince parents not that their information is incorrect but that their children are at risk that is a much more substantial way to cause people to change their minds", Lindenberger said. "My entire family could've been vaccinated". He said his younger siblings have not. In Washington, 55 confirmed cases of the disease, which can be prevented with vaccination, prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency in January.

Vaccine effectiveness was a big topic of interest at the hearing, as well as concerns about the spread of medically inaccurate information online relating to vaccines.

He said it's with "respect and love" he disagrees with his mother. "Ethan has had no education at all in this", Jill Wheeler told FOX8 Cleveland.

"I've heard of people throughout Canada and even doctors around the world saying that millennials are using these outbreaks as an opportunity to revisit the decision that their parents had made for them", he told CBC.

The Post has previously reported on the ways Facebook has served as a place of refuge for parents who reject facts on immunizations.

The teen told lawmakers there should be more focus on the individuals and organizations that knowingly spread misinformation about vaccines.

"We've taken steps to reduce the distribution of health-related misinformation on Facebook, but we know we have more to do", Facebook said in a statement to The Washington Post last month. "If you're such a believer in liberty that you should not be vaccinated, there should be consequences if you infect others", Cassidy said.

Facebook came up several times in Lindenberger's congressional address Tuesday.

In the US, more than 90 percent of the population nationally is properly vaccinated but there are pockets of the country, including in Wiesman's hard-hit state, where fewer children get immunized on time or at all.

"Yes. Mainly Facebook", Lindenberger replied.

"There always seems to be two sides to a discussion. this is not true for the vaccine debate", Lindenberger said. But in December, defying his mother, he went and got inoculated, a rebellion that earned him an invitation to Congress. This became apparent when his mother would share videos and people would dispute her claims in the replies.

In a separate interview with the Washington Post, Lindenberger said that his mom's disagreements about vaccines were "really frustrating". "She would speak openly about these views". In one instance, he cited the CDC.

Lindenberger told NPR News about his mother's reaction to information from the CDC. "She didn't trust any sources". Instead, he attributed her position to misinformation on vaccines that is widely circulated on social media and the Internet.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (yes, they actually call themselves the HELP Senate Committee) convened.

Experts are increasingly concerned that growing rates of vaccine hesitancy-the delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite their availability-has led to several outbreaks of easily preventable, such as measles, in certain parts of the US and Europe in recent years.
