Elizabeth Warren: ‘It’s Time to Break Up’ Amazon, Facebook and Google

"To restore the balance of power in our democracy, to promote competition, and to ensure that the next generation of technology innovation is as vibrant as the last, it's time to break up our biggest tech companies", Warren added.

The senior USA senator and a leading candidate for the Democratic nomination said the companies had "bulldozed competition and tilted the playing field in their favour" as she laid out a plan for strict antitrust rules.

Warren is seeking to stand out in a Democratic field crowded with progressives vying to take on U.S. President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Amazon did not immediately respond to questions about Warren's plan. Before that, she announced sweeping taxes on the ultra-rich. One group would include those companies grossing $25 billion or more globally.

Tech companies are some of the biggest political donors.

Warren says she would work to pass legislation to designate parts of these companies as what she calls "platform utilities" and force Amazon Marketplace, Google's ad business, and Google's search business to separate from their parent companies.

Faiz Shakir, an executive for the ACLU, said in January, "Elizabeth Warren is trying to position herself as the ideas candidate of the field, and thus far, in the early going, she's winning that". She mentioned other holes that prevail in tech policy, like helping local newspapers to make money off their work online.

Now this is what we call a power move.
