Andy Murray confirms intention to return to tennis

I have no pain in my hip anymore and I was in a lot of pain for a long time.

Andy Murray says he is "pain free" after hip surgery but that his chances of playing singles at Wimbledon this year are "less than 50%".

However, a remarkable five-set defeat to Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut gave the two-time Wimbledon victor renewed hope of making a comeback.

A former world no. 1 and the three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray enjoyed a stellar run in the second half of 2016, winning 78 matches and nine titles overall to melt an enormous gap he had over Novak Djokovic after Roland Garros and finish the season at the top.

I am really happy I have had it done and now just have to wait and see how good my hip will get.

Andy Murray is no longer in pain but remains unsure whether he will be able to play top-level tennis again.

"I want to continue playing, I said that in Australia", Murray said at a sponsorship event at London's Queen's Club. "If it's possible I'd love to compete again".

Andy Murray has reiterated his desire to return to playing but conceded it may not be feasible, after confirming that a second operation on his troublesome hip had wiped out any pain in the joint.

Murray's mum Judy stated yesterday that the 31-year-old would put his "heart and soul" into trying to return to professional tennis.

Speaking to CNN, Murray explained that he had nothing to prove, but wanted to prolong his career for his own pleasure.

The Scot, who had his right hip resurfaced in an operation on January 28, said he is pain-free and that his rehabilitation is going well but that it was too soon to know if and when he will be able to play at the top level again.

He added that, as well as the constant pain caused by his hip, he had fought an ongoing mental battle as he sought to keep the issue away from the public eye.

"It's just part of what we do as athletes and competing - we are not going to tell your closest competitor when he asks how your hip is feeling".

"That [press conference] was the first time that I had told everybody that had been asking me for a long time, that this had been really really hard, and I was struggling and it had built up into something".

Murray had hip resurfacing surgery in January - which he said meant there was a "strong possibility" he would not be able to play professionally again.
