The Los Angeles Lakers and Carmelo Anthony are putting contract talks on hold unless the team can get closer to playoff contention, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports. After Saturday's loss to the Phoenix Suns (as well as other games since then), the Lakers are No. 10 in the Western Conference.

The Lakers had been leaning towards signing Anthony for the remainder of the season until losing four out of five games. Heading into Monday night's pivotal matchup against the Clippers, the Lakers are sitting at 30-33 for the season, which is 4.5 games back of the eighth seeded San Antonio Spurs. The Lakers are one roster spot below the league's maximum of 15.

Melo, 34, was waived by the Chicago Bulls on February 1, paving the way for the 10-time All Star to sign with a playoff contender of his choosing.

Anthony, who entered the National Basketball Association in 2003, hasn't played since November, when he and the Houston Rockets agreed to part ways after 10 games. He last played November 8.

While it may have made sense earlier in the season, at this point in time it is quite possible that the addition of Anthony would cause more problems for the Lakers than it would fix. The Bulls, technically, were Anthony's fourth franchise in seven months. Over the course of his career, Anthony has averaged 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
