Collins could sit out spring if Giants tag him

The vagueness of Collins' reported actions and statements do not clarify what his future might be in NY or elsewhere.

Landon Collins, the day after the Giants' season ended, said his "hope is to be here".

ESPN previously reported Tuesday that the Giants are not involved in contract negotiations with Collins, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March at the new league year.

It began in the early afternoon when ESPN's Josina Anderson tweeted: "I'm told that Giants S Landon Collins cleaned out his locker today at the team facility and said his goodbyes to teammates, coaches and trainers". However, conflicting reports quickly emerged with NorthJersey.com's Art Stapleton and the New York Post's Paul Schwartz both reporting that Collins' locker has not been cleared out. "So nothing new and nothing to see here". According to Collins, "The stuff in that locker that I have left I do not need".

This could all mean nothing if the Giants wind up applying the franchise tag to the 25-year-old Collins, which is a very realistic scenario.

Despite it all, Anderson stood by her tweet and amidst the understandable outrage, Collins chimed in with his own take, seemingly in an effort to call off the wolves without entirely confirming what she had reported. If no deal is reached, he'd play under the tag for the season.

He finished with 96 total tackles, four pass breakups and a forced fumble through 12 games in 2018.
