Wawrinka Back To Winning Ways In Rotterdam

Three-times grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka has recovered from a sluggish start to beat Frenchman Benoit Paire in the opening round of the ATP Tour event in Rotterdam.

"It was hard to play against a good friend and we played some good shots".

Benoit gave away nearly half of the points behind his initial shot, suffering four breaks from six chances he gave to Stan and losing the ground after wasting no less than three set points in the closing stages of the opening set. In the tie-break, Wawrinka stepped inside the baseline to gain the momentum.

Medvedev had been forced to save the first set after squandering a comfortable advantage to set up Chardy at 5-4, but he found a timely break to restore parity then secured the crucial first set tiebreak. He will next face fourth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic or Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. Raonic also struggled on second serve, winning just 35 per cent of available points.
