California's liberal Democratic governor nixes high-speed rail line due to cost

"We are not interested in participating in this political theater", Newsom said at a press conference.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is striking another anti-Trump tone by announcing his decision to withdraw most of the state's National Guard from the border. 'The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. An initial estimated cost of about $40 billion when voters first approved the project in 2008 has ballooned to $77 billion. He says building the line could bring economic transformation to the agricultural region.

Newsom said contractors and consultants would be held more accountable in the future, with details of expenditure to go online.

Now it looks like he's scaling even that back. Californians are just going to be left with a train in the middle of some of the more rural parts of the state because the Newsom administration doesn't want to have to repay the federal funding. That spin will come with the complementary spin that California's failure in this case is specific to California, driven by esoteric local issues that certainly won't recur elsewhere in the U.S.as a thousand HSR flowers bloom. President Barack Obama's administration did provide $3.5 billion in stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but the project otherwise saw little additional outside financial support. Cost estimates range from $16 billion to $20 billion.

"Right now, there simply isn't a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to (Los Angeles)". If California finally spears the white whale by linking Merced and Bakersfield and the service ends up being underutilized, what sort of argument is that for other high-speed rail projects elsewhere?

On Monday, April Brent crude futures dropped around one percent, reaching minimum since January 29. Crude oil inventories at the Cushing, Oklahoma facility fell by 502,000 barrels for the week.

He also announced that former California first lady Maria Shriver would lead a new Alzheimer's Prevention and Preparedness Task Force.

Newsom will replace Brown's appointment to the state board that manages the project. No matter how much evidence was presented that the whole deal was a big boondoggle that would leave taxpayers holding the bag, Brown didn't waver.

Critics highlighted the FAQ page in order to show the radicalness of the Green New Deal. A document posted online fleshing out elements of the so-called Green New Deal suggests Democrats are looking to "b$3 uild out highspeed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary". It was a wholly unrealistic plan for any number of logistical reasons, as Joe Setyon explained last week. Canceling the SF-LA route must seem to Newsom like a massive savings at this stage of the sunk-cost dilemma.

And Newsom is no fiscal conservative.

Bullet train planners had been under increasing pressure to make progress on the system that many believe had no plausible way of living up to its goal of getting riders across the state in three hours or less. As bad as they are, those aims are at least preferable to an absurdly overpriced makework project meant to line certain people's pockets at the expense of the taxpayers.
