Bell County officials confirm possible measles case

Three confirmed measles cases in Harris County, one in Galveston County and another in Montgomery County have public health officials urging parents to have their children vaccinated.

The measles outbreak affecting the Portland-Vancouver area hasn't hit Wahkiakum County, yet.

The patients, two boys under the age of 2 and a woman between the ages of 25 and 35, reside in northwest Harris County, officials said.

According to the Bell County Health District, there were four possible cases under investigation.

"Getting vaccinated protects you as well as those who are unable to receive vaccines due to age or medical conditions", said Michelle Beall, Pharm.D., Clinical Pharmacist, Brookshire Grocery Company.

The CDC states measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air via coughing and sneezing, according to the release.

The Texas cases follow dozens in Washington state, where 49 confirmed cases turned up last month. That brings the total number of measles cases in OR up to four.

The United States outbreaks, which are defined as 3 or more cases, are in New York State, New York City and Washington State. Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, 90% of the people close to that person who are not yet immune could become infected. The second is given between the ages of 4 and 6.

Symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis), tiny white spots with bluish-white centers on a red background found inside the mouth on the inner lining of the cheek, and a skin rash made up of large, flat blotches that often flow into one another.

Denton County Public Health confirmed the case Wednesday and is working to identify and contact other people who may have been exposed. "In a sense, we already saw that in 2018, but it looks like cases may pick up more in 2019". The lowest was in 2012 with 55 cases, the highest occurred in 2014 with 667 cases.

Multnomah County officials have reported a steep uptick in vaccinations over this time a year ago.
