Health officials say 5 cases of measles confirmed in Texas

Even though Arizona does not now have a reported case of measles, the state has one of the highest rates of exemptions for at least one vaccine that's required for childcare, kindergarten or sixth grade. According to the CDC, the current outbreaks (defined as three or more cases) are concentrated in Washington State, New York State, and New York City.

These new Multnomah County cases are linked to the Clark County outbreak.

Galveston County Health District also confirmed a case involving a boy whose age ranges from 12 to 24 months old, according to KTRK-TV in Houston. As a highly contagious infection, measles can live in an airspace where an infected person was for up to two hours. "They stayed away from others while on symptom watch, so we have no new public exposures to measles". That includes attending church by video feed and working with employers.

The decision not to vaccinate is one that many in the medical field, including Dr. Bill Mostow, strongly disagrees with, as it can leave that population vulnerable to diseases like the measles. Here's what you need to know. The CDC notes that two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97 percent effective, while one dose is 93 percent effective. Health officials say the case is part of the cluster in the region.

The three Harris County patients are two boys younger than 2 and a woman who is between 25 and 35 years old. Measles vaccinations rose from 200 per day in January 2018 to 600 per day in January 2019.

"People that are actually infected with measles, one in four will get hospitalized and one in 1,000 may die", said Dana Beckham, director of Harris County Public Health.

"Usually, you'll see individuals who may have went overseas, were not fully vaccinated and then came back and had the disease", Espinoza said.

To further limit the spread of the virus, health officials ask that people who think they might have measles call their doctor or health care provider before visiting a hospital or doctor's office.
