California Doctor Loses License After Prescribing Cannabis To A Four-Year-Old

A California doctor is fighting for his licence after he prescribed cannabis cookies to a four-year-old boy.

Dr. William Eidelman, a natural medicine physician, improperly diagnosed the boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder before recommending marijuana as the treatment, the medical board said in a decision announced last month.

Also on rt.com Virtue or vice: Do benefits of legalized cannabis outweigh risks? . "Being agitated and having trouble sitting still hint at ADHD, but could simply hint at a preschooler not happy to have driven many miles to a doctor's appointment".

When the father and son initially visited Eidelman, the boy seemed nervous and agitated but not 'abnormal, ' according to the medical board's documents. The boy was brought to Eidelman by his father for "episodes of uncontrollable behavior and temper tantrums", though these said episodes were not observed during the examination.

The doctor improperly diagnosed the boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder before recommending marijuana as the treatment. He later told the medical board that father was "not enthusiastic" about the prospect, as he had "bad experiences" with psychiatrists himself.

The doctor added the boy's father didn't want him on conventional pharmaceuticals, as he was concerned about the side effects. Eidelman then recommended pot-laced cookies as treatment.

However, it was not Eidelman's decision to treat the child with marijuana that cost him his license.

"It has not been established, by clear and convincing evidence, that the recommendation of medical marijuana to [the boy], with his father's consent, violated the standard of care", the decision reads. The board said that opinions have been split on the issue.

USA hits 'corrupt' Venezuela oil firm PDVSA with sanctions
He cited Washington's sweeping sanctions on Venezuela's state oil firm, a move the Kremlin has called illegal. Such prepayment could be in violation of the sanctions, setting the stage for a standoff at the ports.

Eidelman also did not seek information about the boy's moods, sleep patterns, depression and other pillars of the diagnosis.

The board also took into account the doctor's earlier brushes with the law.

Eidelman takes a pride in his long history of prescribing cannabis, which he has been doing since its legalization.

The Times reported that the medical board ordered Eidelman's license to be revoked as of January 4, but according to his attorney, a Superior Court judge in San Francisco issued a temporary stay allowing him to continue practicing medicine.

"Tantrums alone, and primarily exhibited in one environment (school), do not support either diagnosis", the board wrote in its decision.

Although the board chose to render Eidelman's medical license inactive, his lawyers appealed the decision before it went into effect so he will be able to practice until a hearing that is scheduled in March.

The nurse turned the father into child protective services and the police, which led to the investigation against Eidelman, according to the medical board.
