New Migrant Caravan Departs Honduras for US-Mexico Border

After a caravan of hundreds of Honduran asylum seekers left the Central American country on Monday with plans to reach the USA border, President Donald Trump used the news to call on Democrats to "end the shutdown" by providing the funding he has demanded to build his long-promised border wall between the US and Mexico.

An additional 350 Hondurans crossed into Guatemalan territory, but were being detained by migration officials checking their documents, according to pro-migrant activists traveling with them.

Although a majority of Americans blame the USA president and Republicans for the prolonged partial government shutdown, Trump on Monday said Democrats in Congress are squarely responsible.

Another Central American "migrant caravan" reportedly left Honduras this week; setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with Mexican and American authorities as the undocumented workers slowly make their way north.

Trump threatened to close the U.S. border with Mexico to prevent those in the caravan from illegally entering the U.S. He later raised the prospect of using the military to build the wall absent Democrats complying with his request for US$5.7 billion for its construction.

As the president and Congressional Democrats square off on border security, more asylum seekers are beginning the long trek through Guatemala and Mexico to declare their intent to enter the a handful of border crossings in California and Texas.

He reiterated that promise Monday morning in a tweet that suggested only a border wall would be effective to counter migrant caravans.

Some migrants ran toward the port of entry where they were met by a large group of Guatemalan police, and almost 150 were turned away because they lacked proper documents, police said.

The Mexican government, eager to forge a good relationship with the Trump administration, is also taking proactive steps to prevent the new migrant caravan from reaching the U.S.

Migrants fleeing Central America's Northern Triangle region comprising Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala routinely cite poverty and rampant gang violence as their motivation for leaving.
