Many people took to Twitter to reminisce about "Chippa".

Just before Phil Masinga etched his name into folklore, South Africa had the small matter of a friendly match against England at Old Trafford. "May his soul rest in peace".

No cause of death has been given, though Radebe said Masinga had lost a battle with cancer.

According to reports in the local media, Masinga had been admitted to hospital early last month with an illnesss.

Masinga made his debut for Bafana Bafana in July 1992 against Cameroon in South Africa's first match after re-admission to global football by Fifa.

In addition, he joined Abu Dhabi's Al Wahda in 2001 where he put his name on the scoresheet on 130 occasions out of 253 matches, eventually choosing to hang up his boots in 2002.

"It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of former striker Phil Masinga's passing", Leeds tweeted. "Thoughts with his friends and family".

Leeds United‚ his former English club‚ also paid tribute to Masinga.
