CES: Sex-toy firm revoked for hands-free device slam 'sexist' awards

Last year, the power went out, leaving thousands of people in the dark.

According to company's founder - Lora Haddock, Osé Robotic Massager that is Lora DiCarlo's first product won "honoree" designation in the robotics and drones category of the CES Innovation Awards.

For those who don't know, Ose is based on micro-robotic technology, copying human mouth, fingers and tongue, for women to attain a complete blended orgasm, without the use of hands. And while attending CES gives attendees insight into the future of the digital world, the onslaught of messages through technology in the moment becomes overwhelming. Not only had the CTA revoked their award, but the company wouldn't even be allowed to showcase the Osé, or even have an exhibit at CES 2019.

She then claims the organisers then backtracked over the award, initially citing a rule around the ability to disqualify any device deemed "immoral, obscene, indecent, profane or not in keeping with CTA's image", before saying the device did not fit in the robotics and drone category. Gary Shapiro, CTA's president and CEO, apologized in a separate letter and said the company should have been told it's "ineligible for entry". "There is an obvious double-standard when it comes to sexuality and sexual health", she writes in a statement on the Lora DiCarlo website.

Interestingly, the CTA didn't seem to have any issues promoting sex toys for men. From the 1980s until 1998, CES had an entire section devoted to "adult software ... where porn stars and adult filmmakers openly displayed their products".

Bank of Canada keeps interest rate unchanged
Growth has been running close to potential, employment growth has been strong, and unemployment is at a 40-year low . These developments are occurring in the context of a Canadian economy that has been performing well overall.

CES is making efforts to address gender bias in its show - as it's move to actually have female keynote speakers this year demonstrates, and it's also unveiled a $10 million startup fund for women and diverse founders.

It's that time of the year when tech companies from around the globe gather in the glam city of Las Vegas to show off their latest gizmos and gadgets.

Given its record, it should be easy to cast CES as a chauvinist villain. And while "booth babe" is no longer as widely used a term as it once was, there are still plenty of "promotional models" or "female brand ambassadors" on the floor.

"The product referenced does not fit into any of our existing product categories and should not have been accepted for the Innovation Awards Program".

Of course, the celebration was cut short when Haddock got notice the award had been revoked because of the product's so-called profanity.
