Poland arrests Huawei employee on allegations of spying

It said that the pair had been charged under Polish laws relating to espionage and Polish state news agency PAP said that they would be detained for three months.

The two men were arrested on Tuesday, according to Polish state television TVP.

China's foreign ministry said it was "greatly concerned" by the reports, and urged Poland to handle the case "justly". Both were taken in on spying allegations, but officials said the charges are related to their individual actions and are not linked to the Chinese tech giant. The company said it abides by applicable laws wherever it operates and expects employees to do the same.

Polish media outlets said Piotr D is thought to be a former agent for Poland's ABW counter-intelligence service who is now working as a cyber-security consultant for the Polish branch of French mobile phone provider Orange.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei and the daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in Canada last month at the request of the US government.

Polish public TV channel TVP said the Polish man was a former ISA officer and that security services had searched the offices of his current employer, telecom firm Orange Polska.

The Chinese technology giant is facing increasing pressure across the European Union amid growing concerns that Beijing could use Huawei's gear for spying - something the company has always denied.

While one was identified as the Huawei employee, the other was described as a Polish citizen and former security official.

The developments come after Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver, Canada in early December 2018 at the request of U.S. law enforcement officials.

Federal Bureau of Investigation director Chris Wray said in February that they were concerned about allowing a company "that is beholden to foreign governments that don't share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks".

Norway came out against Huawei on Wednesday (9 December), as Justice Minister Tor Mikkel Wara disclosed that the country is considering excluding the Chinese firm from investing in the next generation of mobile communications (5G).

Orange Polska spokesman Wojciech Jabczynski told AFP that "ABW officials carried out items belonging to one of our employees on Tuesday". Orange told the AP it did not know if the suspicions against its employee were related to his work at Orange or elsewhere.

In a speech last month, Alex Younger, ... Meng was released on bail four weeks ago and is living under restrictions in her million-dollar Vancouver home.
