Police seek DNA from facility’s male staff

The woman, who's been identified as a 29-year-old Native American by news network NTD, was in a vegetative state for 14 years before giving birth at the Hacienda HealthCare facility in Arizona.

A spokesman for Hacienda HealthCare said investigators served a search warrant Tuesday to obtain DNA samples from all male staffers.

The woman has not been named but she's been described as a 29-year-old Native American woman who has been in a vegetative state for 14 years after almost drowning.

The New York Times and NBC News reported that the Phoenix Police Department had opened an investigation into allegations involving the facility but the agency would not discuss the details of the case or how long they had been looking into it.

A lawyer representing the family of a female patient at Hacienda Healthcare who gave birth while in a vegetative state has issued a statement Tuesday night.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Friday, Hacienda HealthCare spokesman David Leibowitz said the organization, which runs the facility, was cooperating with law enforcement but declined to divulge the exact nature of the underlying incident. Staff members reportedly hadn't noticed the patient was pregnant until she went into labor.

Govenor Doug Ducey's office has called the situation "deeply troubling".

Alejandro Benally, Chief of the San Carlos Apache Police Department said in the press release that "this matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Phoenix Police Department".

Gary Orman, executive vice president of Hacienda HealthCare, said the company would "accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

The woman's identity has not been reported, and it's not known if she has a family or a guardian. "I myself have come in a back way many times with no one noticing me", the caregiver said.

"I can't believe that somebody would bathe her daily for nine months and never know that she wasn't having a period, that she [was] growing in her midsection, that nurses weren't keeping track" of her weight, the person said.
