Pakistan will no longer fight someone else's war: Imran Khan

The US has basically pushed Pakistan away, he told the newspaper.

More than 17 years after the U.S. invasion, Washington has stepped up its bid for talks with the resurgent Taliban with a flurry of recent diplomatic efforts.

He said that Pakistan's founder Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah sacrificed everything during his struggle for the creation of Pakistan.

Trump's letter was followed by a visit from United States envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, who has said he hopes a deal can be in place before the Afghan presidential elections, set for April next year.

Khan refuted Trump's accusations saying that Pakistan had suffered far greater financial losses than it received in help from Washington, by participating in its war on terrorism.

Imran Khan has accused the U.S. of "pushing Pakistan away" despite the country's help to bring the Afghan Taliban to peace talks.

Gen. Ghafoor again rejected allegations his country is allowing the Taliban to plan attacks inside Afghanistan. He said Pakistani security forces have eliminated all terrorist sanctuaries on their side and a military-led massive construction effort is now underway to fence off the almost 2,600 kilometer border with Afghanistan.

"Pakistan has chose to respond positively to the USA president's letter and assure its role in the Afghan peace process", the sources added.

McKenzie told lawmakers that he did not see much of a change in Pakistan's behaviour towards Afghanistan or its stand against terrorist groups. It wound down combat operations in 2014 and began training and advising Afghan security forces so they could handle the country's security needs. "We want a similar relationship with the US", he said.

Ghafoor reiterated Pakistan's influence with the insurgent group has diminished over the years, but said Pakistan will use "whatever contacts we have" to facilitate the Afghan peace effort.

"If we left precipitously right now I do not believe they would be able to successfully defend their country", he said, adding that "the operational military situation is largely stalemated". Now I'm happy that everyone realizes there is only a political solution. "It has to be a regional solution, not just a solution centred in Afghanistan", he said. "This is in our own interest", said Stoltenberg. Washington and Afghan officials have long maintained the Taliban leadership is based in Pakistan and is being covertly supported by the country's spy agency.

The prime minister said U.S. special envoy on Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad during his recent visit to Islamabad had very productive meetings with him and the foreign minister on the subject.

The US envoy said they are trying to bring about those circumstances that allows those negotiation among Afghans to occur. It will be hard to reach a settlement without some form of assistance or Pakistan.

Mr Khan said peace in Afghanistan was in Pakistan's interest and vowed to put pressure on the Afghan Taliban but said it was "easier said than done" with "about 40% of Afghanistan now out of the government's hands".

The size of the Taliban in Afghanistan is now estimated to be around 60,000 and they control about 44 per cent of the Afghan territory, he said, adding that it is not a good idea to leave this war-torn country at this point of time.
