Italy nightclub stampede: Five children and mother dead at concert - dozens injured

Six people were killed and around 35 injured in a stampede at a night club in Italy's Corinaldo near the coastal city of Ancona on Saturday, reported AFP. The Lanterna Azzurra club was packed at the time and numerous injured suffered crushing wounds. More than 100 other people were injured, including a dozen who were seriously hurt.

Fire brigades said the stampede took place in the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub in the town of Corinaldo, near Ancona, on the Adriatic coast, where rapper Sfera Ebbasta was performing.

The ages of the victims weren't immediately given.

Officials said people ran for the exits after someone sprayed a noxious substance at 1am local time (12am GMT).

"The cause may have been the dispersal of a stinging substance, the young people fled and trampled over each other", said the Italian fire service on Twitter. According to Associated Press, one of the survivors said that some of the emergency exits were locked when the attendees tried to escape the building.

A 16-year-old boy told ANSA that disco patrons were dancing while awaiting the start of the concert when the stampede erupted.

The "giving way of two parapets due to the crush of the young people getting out" probably caused the tragedy, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini told RAI.
