Apple cancels production boost for iPhone XR

Apple cancels production boost for iPhone XR

Apple has informed its assemblers Foxconn and Pegatron to halt the production line of the smartphone.

Since it's the cheapest of the new iPhone trio, you'd expect the iPhone XR to be the best selling of the bunch, but apparently that's not how things work in Apple land. As a result, Apple has reportedly cancelled the production boost that it was likely to give after the smartphone hit the shelves. It may not have the OLED display with 3D Touch and dual rear cameras, but Apple did ensure that the iPhone XR comes with the latest chipset, and Face ID feature, among other improvements.

Apple also stoked worries about iPhone sales last week when it said that beginning this quarter, it will no longer break down unit sales for iPhones, iPads and Macs.

"We did not witness any notable order push-outs for the iPhone XR after the initial week of its launch, which is the first time we can say that about a new phone release that took place in the fall", Zino added.

As for Wistron, Apple has asked the smaller iPhone assembler to stand by for rush orders, but supply chain sources claim the company will in fact receive none for the XR this holiday season.

Earlier the company planned for the production of 20 million units for the older iPhone models, and now the figure raised to 25 million units.

Meanwhile the iPhone 8 has profited significantly from the weakness of the iPhone XR. And ultimately, after Apple's continued considerable success, I'm not willing to bet that the company got its customer read wrong this soon after the iPhone's triple launch.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment on the report.

First off, it's hard to know if any of this is true, and now that Apple has stated that it will stop disclosing unit sales, we might never know.

Apple announced it has taken $62.9bn (£48.2bn) in revenue for Q4 2018, an increase of 20 per cent ($52.5m) year-on-year.

The iPhone XR - priced starting at $749 - is meant to replace the iPhone 8 introduced a year ago.
