A ninth child has died in a New Jersey rehabilitation facility that is now suffering an adenovirus outbreak, according to officials.

The New Jersey Department of Health said in a news release that "another medically fragile child" who had a confirmed case of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation died Saturday night.

Twenty-five pediatric cases of adenovirus have been connected to the outbreak at this facility, officials said. The child had become ill before October 22, according to officials.

The department confirmed 25 pediatric cases have been associated with the outbreak.

Eight deaths at the facility have been confirmed as adenovirus-related.

"This latest death was an individual who had a confirmed case of adenovirus and had become ill before October 22", explains health officials.

Adenovirus is a family of viruses that typically impact young children and usually cause only mild illness, according to the Health Department.

Adenovirus is a respiratory disease with symptoms that may include a sore throat, pneumonia, diarrhea, pink eye, fever, and inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

The individuals associated with the outbreak became ill between September 26 and October 22, the Health Department said.

The strain found in the rehab center outbreak is among the more potent types and sometimes causes more serious respiratory illness, especially among those with weak immune systems.

"As part of an ongoing effort to ensure all infection control measures are followed, we are taking extra steps to monitor residents and staff for any signs of infectious illness", Elnahal said.

The facility has been told not to admit any new patients until the outbreak ends.

The department is continuing to investigate the outbreak.
