Rotating Postal Strikes Set to Begin Monday

Rotating Postal Strikes Set to Begin Monday

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) filed a notice to strike last week after 10 months of negotiations to renew their collective agreements seemed to have failed.

CUPW announced that a possible work stoppage would take the form of a series of rotating strikes that would affect provinces or regions one at a time.

But Gélineau said that Canada Post president and CEO Jessica McDonald's conciliatory tone has not been matched by a real opening at the bargaining table.

Mike Palecek, CUPW national president, says the goal has always been to settle an agreement without "postal disruption".

If a strike takesplace, Canada Post told the Canadian Press it would notify their customers of any disruptions to service and said postal delivery would continue with possible "minor delays" including delivery of legalized cannabis purchased online.

The violence comes weeks after a similar incident occurred in neighbouring Plateau State, which led to scores reported dead. Moshood said that the operations would cover the entire Kasuwan Magani and its environs and other flash spots in the state.

"It's unrealistic to expect a carrier to deliver at least 150 packages a day, plus mail, plus flyers and try and do it in an eight-hour day - it's completely impossible", Whitfield said.

The key demands for postal workers are job security, an end to forced overtime and better health and safety measures.

In an email to The Canadian Press on Sunday, Canada Post defended itself by stating that it was responding to numerous issues raised by the union, and has already tabled a significant offer that included wage increases, as well as the improvement of job security and social benefits.

The union's release also states that it's been negotiating agreements with Canada Post for nearly a year for the Urban Postal Operations and Rural Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) bargaining units.

In a statement published on their own official website, Canada Post said they are confident that operations can continue with minimal hassle. "We have also addressed numerous concerns raised by the union and offered to work together constructively to find solutions", Canada Post's statement read.
