New 'slippery' self-lubricating condom could increase contraception use

"The last big transformation in the condom world was the development of silicon oil lubricant 50 years ago - so it's nearly like we are not using technology which fits this century".

But more than 90 per cent of the volunteers said they would consider using the coated condoms, and more than half said they would likely use condoms more frequently if the perpetually slippery ones were commercially available.

Condoms are a great way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases including syphilis and the HIV virus that causes AIDS. The result is a condom that stays dry until it is touched with a few drops of fluid - either water or bodily fluids.

The team had 33 people feel the condom, although they couldn't test it in real-life action without permission from the Food and Drug Administration.

"Those water-loving polymers hold on to the water at the surface and that makes it slippery", said Grinstaff, adding that all three substances used are already employed in other medical devices, and that the coating could be added as a final step in condom production without the need to change current the condom manufacturing process.

Research and development of the new condom was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has sought ideas for new technologies that would increase condom usage around the world.

And with the No.10 now back in England after worldwide duty, Hazard has a more immediate focus than sorting his future. He will not force a move away and has already ruled out quitting the Premier League side in January.

The new condom, designed by researchers in Boston University, becomes "slippery" and "slick" when it comes into contact with natural body fluids. Nearly all of them agreed it was better than a normal, non-lubricated condom and many of those who said they never used condoms agreed they would at least try it out. This isn't the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's only venture into birth control - in 2013 it provided grants to 11 companies and individuals hoping to make "the condom of the future", although numerous groups have since stopped working on the projects.

Shop-bought condoms are now estimated to stay lubricated for around 600 thrusts, says the study in the Royal Society Open Science journal. "That will take new chemistry to figure out", he said. One of the graduate students working in Grinstaff's lab, Stacy Chin, has helped found a company to commercialize the product. That is sufficient to wet the surface of the condom.

This won't work for polyurethane condoms, Grinstaff said. In a survey past year condom usage was found to be less than half of the individuals sleeping with new sexual partners in UK.

And the initial user results seem positive: a group of 33 men and women were asked to test the condoms in terms of "slip and slide" and nearly all of them rated them more highly than other brands.

In a 2008 United States national survey, 77% of men and 40% of women said they have had experienced reduced pleasure and increased discomfort while using condoms, as reported by Science Alert.
