United Kingdom says it will maintain existing European Union sanctions after no-deal Brexit

Writing in The Sunday Times, the former Brexit secretary writes: "This is one of the most fundamental decisions that government has taken in modern times".

The rows come with just days until her crucial summit with European Union leaders dubbed a "moment of truth" by the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

LONDON - Theresa May has this coming weekend to change her Brexit plans or suffer a series of walkouts from her Cabinet, government sources have told Business Insider. While London wants to regulate that by a future trade deal with the European Union, the bloc insists on an emergency fix in case negotiating new relations takes longer, or fails.

Out the door? Could Andrea Leadsom resign from the cabinet over the backstop deal?

Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey, who wasn't at the meeting, has repeatedly refused to endorse the prime minister's Chequers blueprint for Brexit.

Ministers at all levels of the government - including as many as six Cabinet members - are thought to be ready to step down if the Prime Minister gives too much ground on the issue.

The tensions have arisen because the EU has made it clear it will refuse to sign an overall withdrawal agreement - paving the way for a transition deal and the opening of talks on an EU-UK trade deal - if the UK insists on specifying a date by which customs "backstop" arrangements created to prevent a hard border in Northern Ireland must end.

But many senior ministers fear that the arrangement could become permanent, and reportedly raised their concerns with Theresa May at last night's meeting.

The Prime Minister last night held a secretive meeting of her "inner cabinet" to outline her proposals to secure a Brexit divorce deal with the EU.

The only other option they have offered the United Kingdom is to keep Northern Ireland in the customs union and divide the United Kingdom with checks in the Irish Sea - something the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has roundly rejected.

Mr Raab said: "We're confident we will have continuity on Eurostar, even in the worst case scenario of a "no deal" situation".

The DUP is also unhappy that May is close to accepting the "backstop" plan for the Irish border, which could involve checks on some goods transported to Northern Ireland from Britain.

The radical strategy has led to a rift between the DUP and their partners in government, with some Tory MPs taking to social media to criticise Mr Wilson's remarks.

Under EU rules agreed in 2017, citizens can access accounts set up and based in one country while visiting other member states, although this regulation would cease to apply in the event of no deal. Whether it is possible is likely to become clear next week, when the prime minister heads to Brussels for what could be a potentially historic summit with other European Union leaders.

Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte said on Wednesday evening he is "cautiously optimistic" that progress will be made next week on the negotiations for Britain to leave the EU.
