PSN malicious message bug may be soft-locking PlayStation 4 consoles

According to multiple threads over on Reddit, there's a potentially devastating issue on PlayStation 4 right now, and it stems from simple messages. In describing the PS4 message, one player wrote that it was merely a question mark in a box, suggesting that the malicious messages can not even be displayed by the PS4.

Initially posted in the PS4 subreddit, a user claimed that a message hit his console that caused it to completely lock up. Numerous reports and confirmations followed, but here's the fun part: you don't even have to open the message. A system bricking would apply that a factory reset wouldn't fix it, and that it would need to be sent to Sony. Reports began to circulate on Reddit about the console-breaking bug, which apparently comes in the form of an unintelligible message that's appearing in the inboxes of some PS4s. You can, however, save your system from bricking if you login to the PS Messages mobile app and delete the malicious message before you turn your system on.

And it's not just opening of the message that does it: just receiving the notification can be enough to force a reset "depending on how much of the message it parses". A player from the other team used a dummy account to send the message and crashed my entire team. Messaging (enter your password) Messages.
