Mom horribly bruised shielding baby from softball-sized hailstones

An Australian mother used her body as a shield to protect her baby from tennis ball-sized hunks of hail during a powerful storm that smashed the windows of her vehicle.

Fiona Simpson from Kingaroy, Queensland was in her auto with her baby and grandmother, about 130 miles north-west of Brisbane when she drove into a storm.

She said she had to protect her baby, who was left alone in the back seat.

Speaking to local news source WIN News Toowoomba, Simpson said that she didn't have time to think. Fearing for her child's safety Ms Simpson put her body on the line.

- An Australian woman suffered severe bruising after she used her body to shield her 4-month-old baby from a brutal hail storm with softball-sized hail that shattered through her vehicle window Thursday, reports said. A tornado also struck the region on Thursday, destroying watermelon crops and downing trees.

ABC reported that the supercell storm ripped roofs from homes and sheds, decimated orchards, and frightened livestock after it tore through the area.

"It wasn't until I got in the ambulance that I realized that if I didn't do that she (her baby) could have been seriously hurt or killed, anything could have happened", she said.

In the Facebook post on Thursday, she said: "I've learned my lesson today, never drive in a hailstorm!"
