The filmmaker behind Marvel's blockbuster Black Panther has reportedly signed on to direct the sequel. When all said and done, the film brought in $700 million domestically and $1.35 billion worldwide. Disney has yet to make an official announcement on any future Marvel movies outside of Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
On top of that, they're also planning on putting the movie forward for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song (for "All The Stars" by Kendrick and SZA), and six more categories, too. However, news recently broke that he would serve as an executive producer on the upcoming Space Jam sequel starring Lebron James. But details about the plot or release date have not been revealed. The Hollywood Reporter reported Thursday that Coogler closed a deal to write and direct the sequel, with sources telling the magazine that Coogler will write the script next year "with an eye to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020". What was less certain, however, was the film's director and co-writer Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) returning. But we can always speculate, and the biggest questions we have right now are: when will it take place in the timeline of this reborn MCU, and which villain will Black Panther go up against?
