Pompeo Faced Hard Bargain From the Start of His North Korea Trip

"China and USA relations are at an important juncture and facing challenges", Yang said.

The top United States diplomat met with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang for two hours before Pompeo flew to South Korea on Sunday afternoon for a two-day visit.

After a previous visit to Pyongyang in July, Pompeo had said the two foes made progress on key issues - but within hours of his departure the North condemned "gangster-like" demands from the U.S., raising questions over how much the two sides really saw eye to eye.

"Most importantly, both the leaders believe there's real progress that can be made, substantive progress that can be made at the next summit", Pompeo said.

Pompeo said there was agreement that Kim and President Donald Trump would hold their second summit as soon as possible, but plans for a sequel to their June meeting in Singapore already were in the works. When asked earlier Monday whether Xi had declined a meeting because of disagreements between the two sides, Pompeo said, "I expect they'll also raise the issues that they're happy with".

In South Korea, Pompeo appeared alongside President Moon Jae-in, who said the world wanted to know the results of the Pyongyang meeting, "so if the secretary can disclose the results, please tell us".

Pompeo and Kim also discussed "denuclearisation steps that will be taken by North Korea and the issue of attendance by the USA government", as well as "corresponding measures" to be taken by the United States, the statement said.

Pompeo's trip to Pyongyang, his fourth this year, followed a stalemate as North Korea resisted Washington's demands for irreversible steps to give up its nuclear arsenal, including a complete inventory of its weapons and facilities.

Wang appealed to Pompeo to cease actions that Beijing sees as threatening its interests in order to avoid disrupting cooperation over North Korea and other issues.

The two officials also discussed the possibility of the United States monitoring Pyongyang's steps towards denuclearisation, the South Korean President's office said on Sunday. US officials have thus far said the penalties will remain in place until the North's denuclearization is fully verified.

North Korean officials have suggested Pyongyang as a site, though that would hand a major propaganda victory to Kim without him having to make a concession.

"President Trump is very close to losing control", he said.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said Sunday, "Secretary Pompeo and Chairman Kim also agreed to instruct their respective working-level teams to meet soon to intensify discussions on the key remaining issues to deliver on the Singapore Summit Joint Statement".

"We're setting that up right now", Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office.

Things didn't go much better a day later in Beijing, where Pompeo had the bad fortune of being the first senior USA official to visit the country since a blistering speech on China last week from Pence.

But Biegun never got to meet his likely North Korean counterpart, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui.
