The company said it determined its course of action based on the data involved in the breach, lack of evidence of misuse and challenges in accurately determining which users to inform. As a result (and because of the relatively low engagement shown by Google+ users in the seven years since the service was introduced), Google plans to retire it to consumers. At its ballyhooed launch in 2011, Google doled out private invitations, leaving the masses eager to gain access-a strategy that worked to great success with the company's rollout of Gmail.

"The review did highlight the significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers" expectations, ' Ben Smith, Google's vice president of engineering, wrote in a blog post. Even so, many users still technically have a profile that has personal information on it. Google will shut it down over the next 10 months for consumers, but keep a version built for businesses open and operating.

Google is shutting down its Google+ social network after it covered up a gaping security hole that exposed the personal data of half a million internet users. The move came amid news that the firm may have failed to disclose a data-exposing security bug presumed to have reached hundreds of thousands of accounts. It's worth noting that Microsoft also has several active Google+ communities dedicated to its most popular Android apps such as the Microsoft Launcher, and it's not clear yet what will happen to them.
