CDC urges public to get flu shot before the end of October

Speaking at a news conference hosted by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases on Thursday, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome M. Adams stressed that flu vaccines save lives and that it was not just about the individual, but keeping the community safe as well, according to CNN.

According to the CDC, over 900,000 people were hospitalized and more than 80,000 died last flu season.

The CDC said it was the worst flu season in decades, which is why officials are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated.

Flu season officially starts October 1.

"Shots are largely effective but they are not perfectly effective at getting the flu and may decrease the severity of the symptoms if you do get the flu". This is important considering that flu complications, including pneumonia, send more than 200,000 Americans to the hospital.

A year ago the vaccine didn't contain the strain that caused so many to get sick.
