Margate: Chas Hodges of Chas and Dave dies aged 74

Chas and Dave singer Chas Hodges has died at the age of 74.

They featured on adverts for Courage beer and Heinz Baked Beans and also collaborated with Tottenham Hotspur FC on their FA cup final songs.

A statement posed on Chas and Dave's official Twitter account today reads: "It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our very own Chas Hodges".

It said Hodges recently received successful treatment for oesophageal cancer, but died pearcefully in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday morning after suffering organ failure. Tributes quickly appeared on social channels.

Hodges was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in February, but was determined to return to the stage and had started performing again. They were known for a string of hits including "Rabbit", "Snooker Loopy", "Ain't No Pleasing You", "Tottenham Tottenham" and "Ossie's Dream".

The band was forced to cancel a number of tour dates in August this year due to his illness.
