Trump says Federal Bureau of Investigation should not probe allegations against top court pick

The woman who has accused Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her decades ago has asked for the FBI to investigate her claims before she testifies to the Senate.

They argue the allegations must be investigated so that the members of the committee have the full facts before they consider the accusations and Kavanaugh's denials.

The cause of McConnell's ire was the late-breaking allegation from Christine Blasey Ford, a research psychologist, that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers, a charge that threatens to upend a confirmation which seemed assured just days ago.

"This is simply too distant and uncorroborated a story to warrant a new hearing or to delay a vote".

The New Yorker magazine says Ford sent a letter about the allegation to Democrats.

Kavanaugh and Mark Judge, a witness Blasey named, have denied the accusation.

"I have never done anything like what the accuser describes - to her or to anyone", he said in a statement.

"Nor is it tasked with investigating a matter simply because the Committee deems it important".

Sen. Mazi Hirono (D-Hawaii) has said that she thinks Ford would feel victimized if she were forced to testify without a full report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Senate, the committee chairman notes, "and only the Senate", is tasked with vetting a president's Supreme Court nominee.

"We should honor Dr. Blasey Ford's wishes and delay this hearing", Feinstein said in a statment.

Speaking to reporters as he left the White House for a trip to visit flood damage in North Carolina, Trump said he "really wants to see" Christine Blasey Ford testify on Monday.

The letter's contents leaked last week and Ford identified herself in an interview with the Washington Post published on Sunday that included details about the alleged assault.
