McDonald's Employees Stage Protest in 10 Major Cities Over Sexual Harassment

Employees in 10 cities are participating, including Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, New Orleans and San Francisco. The women are demanding policies and procedures to prevent and educate about sexual harassment, as well as a safety hotline and a zero tolerance policy for harassment.

McDonald's workers across the USA are planning to walk out during lunchtime Tuesday in an effort to push the company to take a firmer stance against sexual harassment in the workplace.

Staff at McDonald's restaurants in 10 U.S. cities will walk out on Tuesday over claims the fast food giant is not doing enough to prevent sexual harassment. They told her she was acting "like a little girl" about it.

"The walkout is believed to be the first USA strike to confront sexual harassment in more than 100 years", according to advocacy group Fight for $15, which is coordinating the event. "To ensure we are doing all that can be done, we have engaged experts in the areas of prevention and response including, RAINN, to evolve our policies so everyone who works at McDonald's does so in a secure environment every day".

RAINN, an acronym for the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network is an anti-sexual violence organization that runs the National Sexual Assault Hotline.

"This committee would chart a path forward to make sure nobody who works for McDonald's faces sexual harassment on the job", Fight for $15 said.

Advocates are calling on McDonald's to drop the law firm defending the Weinstein Co. from the roster of those counseling the fast-food chain on its sexual harassment policy. "They could do a way better job".

Adrianna Alvarez, who has worked for McDonald's in Chicago for nine years, says the problem is "nationwide, worldwide". A warning for readers, what she said is graphic in nature.

One of the harassment cases involves allegations from a 15-year-old cashier in St. Louis who said an older male employee told her: "You have a nice body; have you ever had white chocolate inside you?"

We've talked a lot about the effects of the #MeToo Movement in the entertainment industry, in politics, and in tech, but of course, those aren't the only industries where sexual harassment and discrimination run rampant.

However, when she reported the incident her "supervisors did nothing".

Which cities are affected by the strike?

The action also comes as unions are putting increased pressure on McDonald's to improve conditions in its stores by implementing a long-sought $15 minimum wage for workers. "The failure to tackle this scourge should compel workers, customers and allies to demand real change and back this strike".
