Hurricane Florence: Carolinas brace for life-threatening storm

Florence flattened trees, crumbled roads and the assault wasn't anywhere close to being over, with the siege in the Carolinas expected to last all weekend.

The latest update from the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has the storm's maximum sustained winds hitting about 145 km/h - down from 175 km/h on Wednesday, and from 220 km/h earlier in the week.

In this September 12, 2018 photo provided by NASA, Hurricane Florence churns over the Atlantic Ocean heading for the US east coast as seen from the International Space Station.

The "threat of freshwater flooding will increase over the next several days" in the impacted areas.

After the storm makes landfall, it will slow down and begin to crawl to the west and southwest along the coast into SC on Saturday. Then it is likely to hover along the coast Saturday, pushing up to 4m of storm surge and unloading water on both states.

A now-weakened Category 2 storm, Hurricane Florence still is expected to be "extremely dangerous" and "life threatening", the National Hurricane Center said. Florence is now expected to bring storm surges as high as 19 feet.

The outer bands of the storm were already reaching the coast Thursday, bringing tropical-force winds and rain.

The police chief of Wrightsville Beach, vulnerable on a North Carolina barrier island, agreed that those who refused to leave were now on their own.

"Catastrophic effects will be felt outside the center of the storm due to storm surge", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday morning.

"It's going to be a lot of wind". The rainfall will cause prolonged significant river flooding.

Deaths reported as Hurricane Florence slams Carolinas
More than 80,000 people were already without power as the storm began buffeting the coast, and more than 12,000 were in shelters. The hurricane has been moving at only 3-6 miles per hour as it drops torrential rains.

As the last-minute evacuations and preparations of those who refuse to leave wound down, an eerie calm has settled over typically bustling Carolina cities.

Most of the damage during Hurricane Matthew in 2016 in North Carolina came from inland flooding - 31 people died and almost 100,000 homes were destroyed.

With the hurricane beginning to batter North Carolina, the state's Governor has asked US President Donald Trump for another federal disaster declaration beyond what he declared earlier this week.

The damage is much more widespread-and while Florence's main targets appear to be the Carolinas, the storm could bring flooding to parts of Georgia and Virginia as well.

The size of a hurricane's storm surge does not factor into the category of a storm. "Additionally, Florence's projected toll is less than Hurricane Sandy's toll of $69 billion and Katrina's cost of $161 billion", Myers said. As the storm moves inland it will find a relatively flat area for hundreds of miles.

Young and his team of scientists including Katie Peek and Blair Tormey built the database which tracks all storm surge levels since the 1800s. However, the surge is expected to be accompanied by large and destructive waves, regardless of when the storm arrives.

While the Piedmont Triad does not now face a direct hit, we are still expected to face significant rain.

The Wilmington airport had a wind gust clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958. Brian Wierzbicki, with U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.

As of 8 p.m., Florence was centered about 85 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Wilmington, its forward movement slowed to 5 mph (7 kph).
