President Trump: Kerry Meetings With Iran Officials Are Illegal

"What Secretary Kerry has done is unseemly and unprecedented", Pompeo told a news conference, adding that he "ought not to engage in that kind of behavior".

In a Thursday night tweet, Trump took a different view, echoing criticism from conservative pundits from recent days.

President Donald Trump had late Thursday accused Kerry of holding "illegal meetings with the very hostile Iranian Regime, which can only serve to undercut our great work to the detriment of the American people". A third is reported to have occurred at the United Nations headquarters, which is not technically on USA soil.

"When I met with the Iranians, the policies of the United States was still to be in the Iran deal because the president had not decided and not pulled out", Kerry said.

Kerry's meetings do not appear to violate FARA, but some have suggested they could be in violation of the Logan Act, which prohibits private citizens from negotiating on behalf of the US government without authorization, though no one has ever been successfully prosecuted under the law. The two were key players in the 2015 nuclear agreement forged by the U.S. and Iran. Kerry replied with a chuckle, "I think everybody in the world is sitting around talking about waiting out President Trump", but he said that was in regard to other matters, not the Iran deal.

In his tweet, Trump asked whether Kerry had complied with the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

3,677 sex abuse cases in German Catholic Church
More than 3,600 children in Germany were assaulted by Roman Catholic priests between 1946 and 2014, a leaked report has revealed. The Kentucky Attorney General wants to launch a criminal probe into allegations of Catholic clerical sex abuse.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act requires agents representing the interests of foreign powers to disclose their relationships with global governments and their related activities and finances.

But Josh Rosenstein, a partner with the Washington law firm Sandler Reiff and a specialist in lobbying compliance, said there are too many unanswered questions to know whether the law applies to Kerry's interactions with Zarif. "John Kerry can't get over the fact that he had his chance and blew it!"

In a radio interview this week to promote a new book, Kerry said he had met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif "three or four times" since leaving office and that their discussions included the nuclear deal that Trump has since scrapped.

Trump tweeted: "I see that John Kerry, the father of the now terminated Iran deal, is thinking of running for President". A third is reported to have occurred at the United Nations headquarters, which is not technically on US soil.

"What I have done is tried to elicit from him what Iran might be willing to do in order to change the dynamic in the Middle East for the better", he said.

Kerry, a principal architect of the Iranian nuclear deal, which Trump pulled out of in May, denied that his talks were about the nuclear issue. You know, how does one resolve Yemen?
